Transition Year (TY) is a one-year programme that forms the first year of a three-year senior cycle in St Angela's College. It is designed to act as a bridge between the Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate programmes.
Transition Year offers our students an opportunity to mature and develop without the pressure of an examination. It also provides an opportunity for learners to reflect on, and develop an appreciation of, the value of learning in preparing them for the ever-changing demands of the adult world of work, further and higher education and relationships. |
St Angela's College TY Curriculum 2018-2019
1. Core subjects (studied throughout the year) In keeping with the aims and objectives of Transition year, students will study a group of Core subjects throughout the year.
2. Subject Sampling Layer ( Term-long rotations) All Students are exposed to the full range of Leaving Certificate subjects offered in St Angela’s College which they study in rotations, thus allowing them to sample all the subjects before making an informed decision on subject choice for LC near the end of Transition Year.
3. TY Module Layer Students study a wide range of Transition Year specific modules and subjects. Some of these options will be elective and students will opt to take on a particular module for the entire year. Others are rotational and will run for seven weeks each.
4. Calendar Layer
Students will experience a range of “one-off” short courses, events and experiential learning activities. As outings are often dependent on staff-availability these may be subject to change. Equally there may be other events added during the year.

Students are encouraged to take part in competitions and activities which are targeted specifically at Transition Year students. Students will be involved in a number of projects during their modules. We expect students to develop and use their initiative to become involved in specific activities, such as the debating club, the President's Award (Gaisce), Mini Company etc. and to start initiatives and clubs appropriate to Transition Year, for example, in music or drama, a show , science, the production of a newsletter etc.
NB: Students in Transition Year are expected to be willing to give of their own free time (outside the classroom contact hours) to take part in activities.
