What is Work Experience?
Transition Year offers opportunities to vary the learning environment and to dispel the notion that learning is something that happens only, or even
most effectively, within the classroom.
One of the ways of doing this, and of providing an orientation towards the world of work, is to include a component of actual work experience.

Community Work
Community/ Social work is an integral part of the Transition Year Programme in St Angela’s College and offers our students the opportunity to help others and to reach out into the community.
It takes place on Tuesday Afternoons from 13:50–15:50. Each group will participate in Community Work for a period of seven continuous weeks during the year. Unlike their base class groups, these groups are organised alphabetically. The first group comprises all students with surnames between Bourke and Fleming.
Listed below are some of the placements which our Transition Year students have found. Further ideas can be found in the Golden Pages under sections such as Charities, Nursing and Convalescent Homes, Hospices, etc. or from the internet.
Preferably each student should research and find her own placement, which may be in her own local community. Each student should endeavour to obtain a placement which involves direct contact with the needy, the elderly, the disadvantaged, the sick, the underprivileged – children or adults; refugees/immigrants etc.
NB: Charity shops are not particularly suitable for community work and we will only consider these as a very last resort. We do not approve of placements in commercial crèches for community work (these are more suitable for Work Experience)
Students are expected to sign an attendance sheet on each day of their placement, and to keep a detailed journal of their experience which will assessed as part of their portfolio at the end of the year.
